From Canon EOS 400D to Canon EOS 7D

After 2 years of using my trusty Canon EOS 400D, I decided it was time for an upgrade when Canon announce they will be releasing the EOS 7D dslr. The price was within my budget, it has the functions that I wanted for my next dslr, and it’s a semi pro body, the perfect upgrade for me ^^. Though I had to wait for quite sometime before shops here get their stock but it’s was quite worth the wait when I finally manage to get my brand new 7D last Thursday.

Alas luck wasn’t on my side as the brand new 7D I just got exhibit some problem after using it for less than 2 days. I took it back to the shop hoping to get a 1 to 1 exchange but unfortunately  they do not have stock anymore, so no choice but to send it back to Canon. Initially the people from Canon told me that they had to wait at least 2-3 weeks for the replacement part to arrive, but I didn’t agree to that since it’s a brand new camera, I ask them for a 1 to 1 exchange instead. To cut the story short, after some phone call exchange with Canon, I finally manage to get my defective 7D replace with a new one, collected it on Friday and tested it, working fine so far ^^.

Canon EOS 7D

Initially impression of 7D is, it’s feel very nice to hold it, quite comfortable. The increase in the buttons and the additional LCD on top takes some getting use to, but once I got use to it, I found that they are very convenient for fast access to change settings on the camera.

The box shot below was shot using EOS 7D built-in wireless flash function. Not too bad, though I probably won’t use it very often since I do have the Phottix wireless trigger, but it’s something quite convenient to have.

Haven’t really done any proper photoshoot using 7D yet, but I’ll be using it for my future photoshoot from now on, so expect more photos taken using the 7D.

Canon EOS 7D is a beast, I would really like to get a semi pro camera one day, in my case the Sony a850. Both cameras cost a lot here, only the body of the 850 reaches almost 2000€ which is completely out of my budget. Still waiting for a true replacement of the a700 though.

Very nice upgrade! I have the 450D myself (Rebel XSI). The top LCD looks very cool. Are there still HUD in the viewfinder?

After a while of using the Canon, I kind of realized the excellence of the adjustable LCD screen of the Sony cameras. Would have been very useful for figure photography and taking shots above crowds. But that’s the only feature I liked about that (no SD Card support = no sale), and Canon was rated better too.

    Congrats on the new upgrade!

Congrats on the upgrade. I have been thinking about getting a dslr for a while now, but not sure which one i should invest in although currently I am leaning on getting either a nikon or canon. Any recommendations for a beginner? I am not even sure which features of a camera to look out for. ^^”

@Belela-san~yeah it is, much heavier and larger than my 400D. wow the price is quite high over there,
@radiant~thanks ^^.yup the HUD is still in the viewfinder, the top LCD will display the same setting that is found on the big LCD at the back, so that you don’t have to keep it on all the time.
haha yeah adjustable is definitely useful, but not something that I look for in a camera. I am still using CF card, both my 400D and 7D uses CF card
@ELTboy~thanks. Well as a Canon user, I’ll definitely recommend Canon, but you won’t go wrong going with either of them. For me besides looking at the specs, I’ll also see how the camera feels in my hand, if it’s feels right then that’s the one I go for. For Nikon D90 is a good buy, for Canon I prefer the 450D or the 40D instead of the newer model.

ELTBoy actually there are other brands besides canon and nikon. Asking a photographer which brand he recommends most will likely say its up to you to decide. Canon and Nikon have more equipment no doubt about that but other brands such as olympus, lumix and pentax have great cameras with one heck of great lenses especially olympus. What I suggest is investigating a bit about all the brands you can find and pin point the pros and cons of those brands in terms of bodies and equipment and then after choosing the brand search for the model that suit your needs.
