My first “L” lens

After upgrading my dslr to EOS 7D last month, it’s time for a lens upgrade. Been cracking my head for the past weeks on which lens to upgrade to, whether should I go for the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, or a EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM. After much consideration I decided to go for the EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM because I find that this focal length is more suitable for my shooting style, and 24mm is quite wide enough for me. The built quality, weather sealing, colors and image quality is also much better and good reasons for me to go for the 24-70 instead of 17-55 lens, though the IQ of 17-55 and 24-70 is quite comparable.

Besides a new lens, I also bought the vertical grip BG-E7 for my Nana-chan, and a 8gb Sandisk Extreme III CF card.

I am quite disappointed with the design of the BG-E7, it feels like Canon design it for people with quite large hand, cause the grip is so wide that is not really comfortable to hold. Canon should also start including the joystick on their vertical grip, take out the AF-On button which I think not much people would use and put in the joystick which is more useful. Oh well still have to get use to the grip, since I need the grip when using heavy lenses and flash and also when I am doing portrait shoot.

    Why is it called L?! Been searching for that for quite a while and haven’t managed to understand what it stands for.

    It’s true that most camera companies make their cameras grips quite large and is commonly known that asian descents have smaller hands than the their western counterparts, still they try to get a middle term between the two but still they can’t get the right size :P . I tried the latest sony “entry” cameras (230 and so on) and the grip is very small for my hands, sometimes we call those girl cameras because the grip is small :P .

    @Belela-san~I am not really sure what’s the L really stands for, some ppl call it L for luxury since L lenses are all quite expensive, they are also the best built, usually much better material than other Canon lenses.
    The 7D body itself is built just right, so it’s kind of weird that they got the grip wrong, but then it’s probably due to the size of the battery it’s using which is longer.
    @alafista~yeah it’s a very nice lens, and now it seldom leave my camera ^^

    Yeah I was tempted to go for this lens but I opted for the 24-105mm L lens as I have a larger benefit from the extra focal length. Though of course whenever I win the lottery I’ll buy this lens as well.

    Congratulation on your purchase, haha. I think it will be a while (maybe 2-3 years) before I will be able to get the Nikon equivalent… unless I win the lottery or something. XD

    @Adun~since I take a lot of portrait and event, I prefer to have a f/2.8 lens hence the 24-70 ^^. Hahah hmm I kind of wonder which lens I’ll get next if I win the lottery
    @Hexlord~hahha
